What the Hell is Going On

It seems as if New Orleans is Caught in some kind of apocalyptic nightmare. People seem to be more concerned with how it will affect gas prices than how to save these people. I'm usually not one to give a shit about politics; but imagine the rescue effort that could be under way if our military was on hand to help the population of our own country instead of playing police man to the planet. How many transport helicopters and 5-ton trucks do we have in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Why is it that the U.S. can give billions of dollars to other countries in their times of crisis, but in our own hour of need, it's the Red Cross and Salvation Army who do the work? Unfortunately since they are, in essence, religious relief organizations, they get no monetary help from our tax dollars. They exist solely on our donations. I saw that Germany has offered help. If Germany is in a position to help us, why do we have thousands of soldiers stationed there?

I am so disgusted with the news. I keep seeing these poor people foraging for food and water in sweltering heat. They keep calling them looters. I'm not so naive to believe that there are not those who are carrying away big screen TV's; but I do believe they are a minority. Have you noticed how many of them are black? It seems that those that could afford the gas left before the storm. Why are the poor always left to fend for themselves? No one went into the ghettos to save them. They had to come swimming out on their own, those that could. How many of the old and sick are still in there waiting to die? I think that when the final numbers roll in we will see a disproportionate number of the dead are from well below the poverty line. We should all be ashamed.

Ashamed is one of many words that comes to mind for me as well. I would like to point out that 70% of the city is populated by Blacks which is why we are seeing so many in news on recovery efforts and "looting", which I would also call survival. Everyone needs to find someone or something to blame. There are many, many at fault here. Local government for starters but the list goes on and on, only starting there. Bottom line, it all comes down to money. Warnings to rebuild that levee have been issued for years and ignored. This is no surprise.
This is a city I once lived in and love more than I can express. I pray for them all and hope we all do what we can to help. If not, then WE should be ashamed of OURSELVES.
Peace..................

It is hard to believe a country like America did so little to prevent so many of it's people from dying such an unneccasary death.

Hey Dennis, there is a galaxy of a difference between the world of 1941 and the world of today.

First off, we now occupy more nations than Hitler did in 1941. WOW.

Good things are being done for the people of the U.S. of A. by our leaders.( at least the well connected ones)

so maybe i have an unpopular opinion. i know that i am fortunate to be able to hold such an opinion from my lofty, fairly safe home. But really, here we have earthquakes,no predictions there, so what can ya do. i used to live in a place with tornados. when you hear the warning, you get in your shelter... or at the least in your bathroom with a matress over your head if you are poor adn dont have a shelter! If i heard a hurricane was coming and i couldnt afford gas... i would be WALKING my happy ass out of there, but the baby in the stroller, and head for the hills, if everyone is evacuating, someone will pick up hitch hikers. i understand about old sick infirm whatever... but how many able bodied folks just didnt leave and then say "its cuz im poor and black". i dont buy it. you couldve WALKED. hurricanes give days, sometimes weeks of warning.
